I am going to talk about one method of construction and that is the butt and pass method of building a log home. Why? Because it is the easiest and the cheapest way to build a log cabin wall.

I know that some of you reading this article will not agree with me and that is your right to do so, but I have built, seen and tried other methods and the butt and pass method is the cheapest and easiest to do

If you are not sure what the butt and pass method of building a log wall is, it is very simple.

The butt and pass method of building a log wall is:

  • You take logs that are either green or seasoned (nearly all kinds of logs are OK)
  • You place them on top of each other in a spin wheel formation (I explain more in other articles)
  • You pin the logs together with rebar

That is basically how you build the walls for a butt and pass log home. No scribing or cutting out large chucks of wood. Very little skill required and hardly any tools needed. As with any other home you will of course need to lay down foundations, install electric, water, gas, install a floor and roof and finish of your home. The butt and pass method of building the walls is elegantly simple and if you have the luxury of a crane or large cherry picker, you can have the walls built for a 40 x 40 log home built in less than two weeks!

Let me quickly address the issues you may have regarding this method of building.

Foundations – You only need to use pillar / post foundations for a butt and pass log home. They are easy to create and are the cheapest to construct.

Green logs – Best to use logs that were cut down in the winter when their sap is down and these logs will shrink a little towards their center when pinned into the walls. This means NO settling of the walls. However they may need a little more ongoing maintenance with regards to the chinking due to the gap increasing slightly between the logs.

Ease of build – You don’t need many tools or building skills to build with the butt and pass method (of course I am talking about the walls).

Cost of building – Well as I have said, you can build a butt and pass log home using the butt and pass method to build the walls for less than the price of a second hand car, but how? First I said BUILD, so if you don’t already own some land that you can build on, then that is an additional cost.

You need to have some land, have the permits to build and some logs. After that you need the right tools to do the job.
The tools that you need to build the walls for a butt and pass log home are very few and can be picked up very cheaply from the internet or thrift shops etc… This is where you need to be smart and shop around, ask friends and family if they have anything you can use. The point here is I am guessing you will only ever build one log home so you don’t need to go out and buy brand new shiny expensive tools as you won’t use them again after you finish building.

The most important tool you will have is yourself. Building is back breaking work so I hope you are fit and strong. You need to dig massive holes in the rock hard ground for foundations and possibly septic systems and that is not easy with just a pick and a shovel. You can do it yourself or hire a backhoe, but that is money! You can use ropes and pulleys to help you lift the logs into place; however you can take away a lot of the heavy work by renting a cherry picker or a crane for a few weeks but again that is a budget issue and is up to you.

Logs are free if they are on your land, so cut them down in the winter and build in the spring. If you don’t have logs DON’T buy them from a mill. You need to look around and talk to loggers in your area, go straight to the source and ask land owners if you can have some logs. Getting logs is not difficult if you are willing to ask lots of people. There is even a way of getting FREE logs!

Of course there is so much more to building a butt and pass log home than I have explained here and you know that right? All I want to do here is say “yes you can do it and yes it can very cheap to do it”, so go and do it.

A little about what we can offer you:

We build log homes. A log home is a structure that has been built using LOGS that have NOT been anywhere near to a saw mill. They come out of the ground and then prepared (bark stripped) to make your log walls. Wikipedia – A log house (or log home) is structurally identical to a log cabin (a house typically made from logs that have not been milled into conventional lumber).

Don’t be fooled into believing that anything else you see other than a home built with FULL logs is a log home, it isn’t!

Have you ever heard of a butt and pass style log cabin? Most people who are shopping for log cabin kits haven’t, and there is a good reason for it.

You will probably learn more about log homes reading this than you would learn from talking to a log cabin kit salesman for five years. In the next couple of paragraphs we’re going to reveal the deep, dark log home secret: butt and pass

The log home “industry” doesn’t want you to know about butt and pass log homes. When you pick up a log home magazine and flip through the pages you will see dozens of log cabin kits that look very beautiful, but you will almost never see a butt and pass style log home. Typically the kit log home magazines show Canadian chinkless and saddle notch log cabins. Why?

The kit magazines are 100% supported by advertising from manufacturers of log cabin kits. And here’s the big bombshell:

It is not possible to make log cabin kits out of a proper butt and pass style log home.

The reasons for this have to do with the technical nature of building a butt and pass log home vs. building log cabin kits that must be shipped somewhere else and “reassembled” by a builder. The reasons are too detailed to go into here, but suffice to say that there is no such thing as butt and pass style log cabin kits.

Why should you know about butt and pass log homes?

If you are planning to build your own log home (or hire a builder to do it for you), you should educate yourself about the different styles and methods of building a log home before you start shopping for a kit or a builder. You should definitely at least know the difference between Scandinavian chinkless and Canadian Chinkless. You should also be familiar with the butt and pass style, because they have certain advantages that manufacturers and builders of log cabin kits won’t tell you about. Advantages that you won’t read about in log home kit magazines. A properly built butt and pass log home has many benefits, so here are just a few:

Butt and pass log homes are stronger than any other type of log home.

Butt and pass log homes last longer than any other type.

When built correctly, a butt and pass log home requires no ongoing maintenance (such as coating your house with sealants and other chemicals every few years). We’ve never seen a log cabin kit that doesn’t require sealants or other chemical treatment every few years. Do you really want to breathe that stuff?

That’s why you shouldn’t buy log cabin kits.

My Three Core Values

On every log home project I handle — whether it’s building a new log home or renovating an existing one — I keep my three core values in mind:

  • The finished log home must be worthy of being passed down from generation to generation – That’s your LEGACY.
  • It must stand up to being the seat of family traditions, holiday visits, vacation memories and happy retirements.
  • It must be the realization of your vision and dreams.

When built correctly, a butt and pass log home can outlive any other type of log house, and it doesn’t require endless coats of stain or other sealants to protect the logs from decay”.
